Coastal strategy: Coastal Dynamics Information Service
The Coastal Strategy proposed by the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia is implemented through the Coastal Dynamics Information Service (SIDL) with the mission of acquiring, compiling, harmonizing and officializing information on the morphology, evolution of beaches and on the vulnerability and impact of erosion and marine flooding throughout the Catalan coastline.
The strategy deployed through the SIDL is made possible by the Catalan Office for Climate Change and with the participation of the General Directorate of Environmental Policies and the Natural Environment through the Marine Habitats Map of Catalonia project and all members of Technical Commission 5: Coast of the Cartographic Coordination Commission of Catalonia.
The SIDL allows for the availability of homogeneous and updated information on the entire Catalan coast in order to promote the knowledge necessary for better management and planning of coastal uses and resources, their protection against the risks of flooding and erosion and to establish routes for adaptation to climate change; and to promote research.
The Institute's experience in the acquisition and generation of geoinformation; in the dynamics of active geological processes and in the coordination and homogenization of different producing organisms allows for the integration of information and knowledge of the dynamics and evolution of the coastline.
The recipients of the information acquired and compiled are the following:
- Public administrations: For territorial planning and management of coastal areas.
- Researchers and scientists: For the study of coastal dynamics and the generation of reliable predictive models.
- Citizens: For the understanding and protection of the Catalan coastline as a natural heritage and its awareness of the effects of climate change.
The project covers the entire coastline of Catalonia, from the coastline to a depth of between 15 - 20 meters and up to 0.5 - 1 km inland.
For the development of the strategy deployed through the SIDL, the participation of the Catalan Office for Climate Change, the General Directorate of Environmental Policies and the Natural Environment through the Marine Habitats Map of Catalonia project and all members of Technical Commission 5: Coast of the Cartographic Coordination Commission of Catalonia is essential; Likewise, there is the participation of research centers and universities with experience in coastal research, and specialized service companies.
Data and techniques
The project uses technologies specific to the capture and processing of image data and LIDAR sensors and methodologies and techniques specific to the disciplines of Earth sciences, such as sedimentology, geophysics, geomorphology and knowledge of active geological processes; together with satellite interferometry for monitoring subsidence.
