Geological heritage
The ICGC develops, updates and maintains databases of geological and paleontological heritage in collaboration with other organizations and institutions
Geological heritage is an inseparable component of natural heritage and the way to protect it is, in the first instance, the identification and inventory of those geological elements (formations, structures, landforms, mineralogical or paleontological deposits, etc.) that allow us to recognize, study and interpret the evolution of the Earth's geological history and the processes that have shaped it.
The elements of geological interest that are not part of the official inventory are the most vulnerable. Having a robust, complete and dynamic inventory that becomes the knowledge and management instrument will guarantee the possibility of protection and dissemination established in the objectives of the Strategy for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Catalonia 2030. The strategy also contemplates the inclusion of the elements of the inventory in the System of Protected Natural Areas of Catalonia.
Geological heritage is also made up of collections of rocks, minerals and fossils ex situ in museums (movable geological heritage) as well as the traditional uses and exploitation of geological resources.
