Measurements of vertical movement of the land surface from Synthetic Aperture Radar and Differential Interferometry images

The SIDL Subsidence Viewer is an interactive tool that displays surface movement measurements obtained with the processing of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and SAR Differential Interferometry techniques. Its purpose is to provide a geospatial representation of land deformation over time, facilitating quantitative knowledge. The results are displayed on a color scale according to the speed of movement (mm/year) and allow detailed consultation of time series by selecting specific points.

This viewer is particularly useful for public administrations, territorial managers and those responsible for critical infrastructures, both in the public and private sectors. The data obtained can be downloaded and integrated into other geospatial analysis platforms for geological risk management and territorial planning.

The viewer covers the entire coastal strip of Catalonia. It shows measurements of points in the territory where temporal coherence is maintained, that is, where the physical characteristics of the terrain have not changed between successive measurements captured by the Sentinel-1 satellite of the Copernicus program. The data is updated with each new image available.

Formats, visualizations and interactive features

The viewer offers several visualization options to facilitate the analysis and interpretation of the data:

  • Possibility of selecting points of interest and downloading the data in CSV format for a more detailed analysis.
  • Selection by speed range and by components of the velocity vector.
  • Downloading the data to be able to use them in other analysis tools.

What is the role of the ICGC in this viewer?

The ICGC is responsible for processing Sentinel-1 data with its own interferometric chain adapted to Catalonia and for developing the viewer's functionalities.

With this data, services have been provided and are being provided to mobility infrastructure monitoring projects or mining activity monitoring projects worldwide. In Catalonia, services have been provided to entities such as the Port of Barcelona, the Catalan Water Agency and the Railways of the Government of Catalonia.
